GO-BAMA between Hope & Dreams
An uplifting fly-on-the-wall documentary that portrays the monumental time of change during the Obama campaign that led up to his presidency in 2008. Combining his own personal story with the experiences and discoveries he makes on the campaign trail, Director Satti interweaves complex cultural questions with his biographical legacy, and himself becomes a source of re-newed inspiration reconciling the personal and universal dream for a better world.
In the film we meet Satti, who was born to a German mother and a Sudanese father, and raised behind the Iron Curtain under the oppression of Communist East Germany. Believing in hope was constantly difficult, even after the fall of the Berlin Wall and Germany’s re-unification.
After reading Obama’s The Audacity of Hope in 2007, Satti was so moved and inspired, he decided to travel to the US and find out what it was about this candidate that gave people globally such a feeling of hope and optimism. Hooking up with a network of people in Los Angeles introduced to him by a friend, Satti set out on his quest to find hope again by witnessing firsthand the Obama campaign.
Criss-crossing the country attending rallies and speeches, Satti encounters varied and charismatic people that offer deep insights into the political and personal expectations that led to the Barack Obama Presidency. Satti also delves into Obama’s history in an attempt to reconcile his own story, which shares a number of similarities to Obama’s, in order to gain insight on how hope can be reclaimed.
Satti’s initial skepticism is overwhelmed and transformed by the enthusiasm and spirit of the American people, as well as by the energetic, charismatic Obama. Nevertheless, he dares to ask: “Can we really resurrect our lost hopes and dreams?”
