Northless (Norteado)
Drawn to the Northland, Andrés, a young farmer from Oaxaca, reaches the Mexico/US border and tries to cross over. Failing repeatedly, he settles in Tijuana to plot his next attempt. Between each try, he discovers that this depraved bordertown, his new adopted home, is quite a troubled one.
While biding time there, Andrés not only confronts his dreams and what he has left behind, but also those of the people he has recently befriended: Cata and Ela, women who own a Tijuana convenience store and await their husbands’ return from the north to retrieve them.
The perennial plight of Mexican immigrants attempting to cross the U.S. border receives a fresh look by Mexican filmmaker Rigoberto Perezcano, who presents an honest, non-exploitative take on a young man’s failed crossings and the life and new “family” he creates in Tijuana in between them. Perezcano’s debut feature, Northless (Norteado) has won several awards at prominent film festivals and was nominated for 10 Ariel Awards (the Mexican version of the Oscar) including for Best Film, Director, Actor and Actress.
